Description

Appearance:

  • Elongated, slender body reaching up to 11 inches (28 cm) in length
  • Translucent body with a brown or green tinge
  • Black stripe running along the midline
  • Large, sucker-like mouth for scraping algae
  • Forked caudal fin

Behavior:

  • Territorial as adults: Become aggressive towards other fish, especially of the same species.
  • Nocturnal: More active at night.
  • Bottom feeders: Spend most of their time searching for algae on rocks and plants.
  • Can be shy: Hide behind rocks and plants during the day.

Care requirements:

  • Established freshwater aquarium (minimum 30 gallons for a single adult)
  • Stable water parameters:
    • Temperature: 72-82°F (22-28°C)
    • pH: 6.0-7.5
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
  • High water quality with good filtration and regular water changes
  • Large aquarium with plenty of hiding places and open swimming space
  • Varied diet, including algae wafers, sinking pellets, and live food
